Juan Jose Millas(1946- ) has been considered by the critics as one of the leading writers in the contemporary Spain and most of his works center on theoretical reflections on literature, writing and criticism. The present study aims to analyze how reality, fiction and metafiction function in El desorden de tu nombre (The Disorder of Your Name, 1988), the most popular novel by Millas, in terms of the structure, characters and themes. El desorden de tu nombre attempts to show us that literature is the re-creation of reality and fiction/imagination. The conclusion proposes that the elements of reality, fiction and metafiction in the novel are juxtaposed as well as correlated intricately. Through the story of the main character, Julio Orgaz, Millas plays with the idea of the "real" life parallel to the "fictional" life, whose coincidences are attributed to the use of metafiction, which allows the writer to break the borders between life and literature, between reality and fiction.
