Professor HO Sik Ying begins with a personal reflection on the relationship between participation in the Umbrella Movement and her academic and personal life during and after the Umbrella Movement. She shows the extent to which participation in the Movement had the capacity to change her personal life, academic career and perception of democratic struggle as a gender/sexuality scholar. She is now interested in both the politics of the personal and the personal consequences of the political especially as manifested in political processes. Her analysis of the overlap between the public and the private has created a space for the exploration of how work life, collegial relationships and different aspects of personal life can become sites of political engagement. When Ho first introduced the idea of a ‘democratic lover` in her work as a scholar of sexuality it referred to someone who prefers open to exclusive relationships and is not possessive. Thus they apply democratic principles to their relationships. Involvement with the Umbrella Movement has added a new element to this concept, focusing on how practices of democracy in intimate relationships must include dealing with differences in political stances and the conflicts involved. Her re-definition of the concept of `democratic lover` and reflexive accounts of self-transformation and description of various kinds of political actions vis-a-vis the Movement illuminate the limitations of resource mobilisation theories in addressing gender and power issues involved in women`s political participation. The article offers a unique perspective and interpretation of the Umbrella Movement.
