(1)a. 지금 갈 수 있어요? 現在可以走了嗎?→表示可能性 b. 지금 가도 돼요? 現在可以走了嗎?→徵求對方的許可 (2) 여기서 사진을 찍어도 돼요? ?在這裡照相也可以嗎?→可以在這裡照相嗎? (3)a.
There are two meanings of “Can(可以)” in Chinese. One means “be able to” or “possibility” which in Korean is ‘-ㄹ/을 수 있다’. The other means “permission” which in Korean is ‘-아/어도 되다’. Hence, it seems correctly to translate both ‘-ㄹ/을 수 있다’ and ‘-아/어도 되다’ into “can”. However, we can not always translate ‘-ㄹ/을 수 있다’ into Chinese word “can”, because both ‘-ㄹ/을 수 있다’ and Chinese word “can(可以)” have many kinds of meaning. As for translating ‘-아/어도 되다’ into Chinese word “can”, due to the fact that beginner always does literal translation from ‘-아/어도 되다’ into ‘(even though)..., still can... (即使)~也可以’ and ‘-ㄹ/을 수 있다’ into 「可以」, so it becomes difficult to associate ‘-아/어도 되다’ with 「可以」. It’s a typical mistake, when people learn Korean. The following sentences explain the relations and differences. (1)a. 지금 갈 수 있어요? Can I go now?→means possibility b. 지금 가도 돼요? Can I go now?→asking for permission (2)여기서 사진을 찍어도 돼요? ?Is it also alright to take picture here? →Is it ok to take picture here? (3) a. 나는 김치를 먹을 수 있어요. I can/am able to eat kimchi. b. 한국말을 할 수 있습니까? Can you/Are you able to speak Korean? c. 지금 말할 수 있습니까? Can you/Are you able to talk now? d. 이렇게 하면 좋아질 수 있어요 . It can/may be great! People have to become flexible, when they learn language. If people do literal translation from Korean to Chinese or from Chinese to Korean, they will easily meet this kind of confused situation: Translating different Korean sentences into same Chinese sentence. Therefore, people have to learn Korean by full comprehension then put in use, instead of memorizing sentence patterns. In this way, similar mistakes can be reduced.
