The name change of Speech Communication Association (SCA) to National Communication Association (NCA) not only reflects the effort of the discipline to reassure its identity, but also shows the reorientation of the discipline to a new direction of research and pedagogy. In order to better understand the trend, this article attempts to succinctly examine the history of communication studies and the development of communication theory and methodology from the perspectives of ontology, epistemology, and methodology. The potential future development of the discipline is also discussed.-
