Abstract

李金銓觀點：以歷史為經，以世界為緯。做中國研究，要放眼全世界；主體性還是中國，眼光包含全世界。見樹又見林。要看到局部，又看到全部，才能夠曲盡其致。規律和意義在某個地方是可以結合的。見其大，又能見其小。主題要言不煩，提綱挈領，層次分明，因果嚴謹；但每個主題轉折多致，柳暗花明，意義豐富。

This paper covers several main topics: (a) the interplay between media and society; (b) the tension between Chinese media studies as part of area studies and Chinese media studies as part of theory building; (c) indigenization and ”modernization” of Chinese media studies, as seen from the perspectives of seemingly conflicting academic paradigms and epistemological orientations; and (d) a rough outline of problematics and projects for Chinese media studies. This paper is based on two academic conversations: the first between Lee and scores of post-graduate students in the humanities and social sciences at the City University of Hong Kong; the second between Lee and Huang. Lee is Chair Professor of Communications at the City University of Hong Kong, and Huang is Associate Professor of Journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University.
