This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the criteria taken by different movie investors in Taiwan. It explores how Taiwanese film practitioners evaluate film investment to understand if the film product is worth investing in or producing. Besides literature study, this paper interviews 9 experienced investors and producers in Taiwan to understand the context and structure of their decision-making process. With the repeated themes of ‘artistry’ and ‘marketability’ examined, this paper finds 19 sub-criteria and a multi-criteria decision-making structure that could reflect the tacit knowledge of the experts.\n\nAccording to the study findings, interviewees with production background tend to pay more attention to aspects of `artistry`, while interviewees with distribution and financial background focus more on `marketability`. In fact, these interviewees have no differences in the items of the criteria. However, different priorities on the items can lead to different assessment process and thus result in different patterns of meaning.
