Media has long been regarded as a "tool" or "means" for social movements to achieve the goals. However, as media nowadays has penetrated into everyday life, it apparently oversimplifies the complex relationship between media and social movements. What’s worse, the discussion has always been centered on the dualistic framework of techno-utopian and dystopian thinking, suffering from what Mattoni and Treré (2014) called "the one medium bias" and "the technological-fascination bias". We lack a proper conceptual framework to describe and analyze the interweaving relationship of social movements and media.\n\nAccordingly, this study uses "mediatization" and "actor network theory (ANT) " as a starting point to develop a new approach to help us grasp the overall and dynamic interrelation between changes in social movements and media in the "on the mediation of everything" society (Livingstone, 2009) . This new approach regards "mediatization of the movement of the social" as the interrelated changes in a controversy during the assembling process of all the human and non-human actors, especially media. It should be media-decentralized but media-concerned to avoid determinism or reductionism.\n\nIn order to illustrate how this new approach applies empirically, I take the controversy over the 2018 Taiwanese referendum for marriage equality as the illustrative case, showing how mediatization process takes place in propelling Taiwan to be the first Asian country in legalizing same-sex marriage. This study also reflects on the advantages and disadvantages of this new approach, and provides directions for further theoretical and methodological discussion.
