The purpose of this paper is to analyze the marginal uses of the “(noun)ni/to naru” expressions in Japanese. In my analysis(2001) , I have found that the “(noun)ni/to naru” expression has prototypical meaning of change-of-state , besides it has several kinds of non-prototypical meaning . The main discussion of this paper includes passive use and potential use , related to the change-of-state sentences either in construction or in meaning . In addition , the paper attemps to clarify the unique characteristics of double use of “change-of-state” expression and idioms which contain “(noun)ni/to naru” pattern from the viewpoints of cognitive semantics .-
