Based on attachment theory, anxious and avoidance styles might relate to self- and other-forgiveness differently and is worthy of further investigation. Thus, this study investigated the role of forgiveness in insecure attachment styles and negative affect and interpersonal problem relations. Three hundred seventy undergraduate students were surveyed and after controlling the potential effect of common method variances the results showed that: 1. In contrast to the relationship between avoidance styles and self-forgiveness, anxious styles had a higher negative association with self-forgiveness; 2. Self-forgiveness had a higher negative association with interpersonal problems than the relationship between other-forgiveness and interpersonal problems; 3. Other-forgiveness could mediate the relationship between anxious styles and interpersonal problems. The results showed supportive evidence for the important role of forgiveness in insecurely attached individuals. The study also discussed limitations and future directions.
