The Soviet Union and the United States were major adversaries in the space race that was part of the Cold War in the last century. During it, both countries underwent political and technological developments that affected the rest of the world. At present, however, instead of Russia, America faces the rise of China, which in recent years has been significantly building its space capabilities and thus challenging America`s hitherto fearless position as a leader in space developments and explorations. In addition to building their own capacities, both countries use strategic partnerships with other countries or organizations to promote their interests, but mutual cooperation is minimal. However, the rising factor for both countries is private companies, as they are an important actor not only for the rivalry of states but also for the economic background of the space industry.\nThis thesis focuses on the political background of Sino-American relations with emphasis on the period 2012-2020 and analyzes the space activities of both states in this time frame. Growing Chinese activity, which is perceived by America as a potential threat to their interests, led in 2015 to the establishment of a separate military branch, Space Fore. In recent years, the private sector has been significantly supported in both countries, which, in addition to commercial activities, also cooperates with state organizations. For America, these activities represent a significant strategic advantage, not only in the use of technology but also to strengthen the economy or international position. In the future, it will be private companies that, with the support of the states, will be able to engage in resource mining, which, however, due to the absence of a legal framework, will contribute to tensions between countries.
