從2001年的縣市長選舉之後，「北藍南綠」就成為描述台灣藍綠政黨勢力版圖最常見的詞彙。本研究的目的在於有系統地，並且較深入地檢視這種說法，並且探討背後的因素。我們認為如果「北藍南綠」真的存在，可以從社會系絡因素的角度去進行探討，當民眾處於相似的外在環境下，容易發展出相似的需求與利益，他們會傾向透過同樣的有色眼鏡去看這個世界。北部民眾之所以投藍，是因為他們處於泛藍優勢的系絡環境中；相對地，南部民眾則是處於泛綠優勢的系絡環境中。\n\n本研究首先討論台灣選民外在環境的轉變。在政治民主化之前，選民所處的系絡環境只有單一的「藍色」，經過1986～2000年的政治民主化之後，因為黨禁的解除、選舉競爭的全面開放、媒體管制的鬆綁、廢除刑法一百條及國民黨動員機制的弱化，使得民進黨的論述得到發展的空間，才讓「南綠」有發生的可能。接著本研究透過單次選舉結果及政治版圖分析台灣的「北藍南綠」現象。研究發現泛綠陣營在南部地區不僅是整體得票率有所增長，而且在縣市層級、鄉鎮市層級都可見綠化的現象，綠化的範圍逐年擴大，並非集中在單一縣市或少數鄉鎮市。\n\n最後我們透過選民所處社會系絡的南北差異，以及社會系絡對選民投票抉擇的影響，探討南部綠色政治版圖形成的選民行為因素。研究結果發現，南部與北部的選民的確處於相當不同的系絡環境當中，北部的社會系絡偏藍，南部的社會系絡偏綠，而多層模型也確認社會系絡對於選民的投票抉擇有顯著的影響，因此造成了「北藍南綠」的選舉結果。
