This research proposal titled “The History of Taiwanese Identity and Mentalities: centered on the private sources of diary, biography and reminiscence, 1895-1960, is an extension of my Ph.D. thesis titled From Honto Jin to Bensheng Ren- the Origin and Development of Taiwanese National Consciousness: based on an Examination of Two Diaries, 1920-1955. The goal of this proposal is to explore the pictures of Taiwanese identity and mental world and how they evolved in the context of modern Taiwan, through examining more diary sources written by diarists with broader background in terms of class, education, geography and generation. This research is scheduled to be completed in three years time. ”
