en_US
The paper examines historical as well as linguistic facts and thus justifies the indigenous status of Taiwan Mandarin on both fronts. First, linguistically, Taiwan Mandarin, as a self-contained language, has its own unique features in phonology, lexicon, and syntax. Second, the politics and the composition of Taiwan’s population in the past sixty years dictated the independent development of Taiwan Mandarin. After four generations, the language is by now fully indigenized, a fact also fully reflected by the population’s language attitudes. This unique link between Taiwan society and Taiwan Mandarin requires the recognition of Taiwan Mandarin as a new indigenous language.en_US
