After the feminist movement and particularly Women`s Liberation Movement in the 1960s, women in Britain did have a better chance to realize their dreams and themselves than their predecessors. Women soon received the good and bad impacts of the sexual equality. While some women enthusiastically embraced their newly acquired rights and benefited from their elevated social status, others remained“doubly subjugated”—subjugated by men and also by the privileged women—and disfavored by this newly liberated status. British feminist Caryl Churchill in her Top Girls(1982) examines the double-edged results of the women`s liberation movement. Marlene in the play is the one who symbolizes the new woman, liberated and empowered by the Women`s Liberation Movement. She has been recently promoted to be the manager of “Top Girls Employment Agency." But not every woman can grasp the opportunity to realize herself. Her sister, Joyce, is such an example since she still remains as a hard-working factory laborer. She is also the one to take care of Marlene`s illegitimate daughter Angie. She seems to be handicapped by her low social status and by the child. She has enjoyed least of the benefits from the Women`s Liberation Movement. This paper intends to employ feminist spatial theory to analyze the positive and particularly the negative impacts the feminist movement has brought on women’s self-actualization.
