Apoptosis or programmed cell death is a process of essential importance for regulation of intracellular and physiological homeostasis. Cell apoptosis in muscle cells and blood cells by aerobic exercise usually showed in soccer players with intermediate-intensity exercise. However, it remains unclear in acute exercise-induced cell apoptosis. It is speculated that acute exercise-induced apoptosis is a regular process that serves to remove damaged cells without an inflammatory response and regulate the intracellular microenvironment. There are no well-defined mechanisms on acute exercise-decreased the number of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The aim of this study was to examine the induction of PBMCs underwent apoptosis in college soccer players (n=15) before or after 80 min of a full game by using annexin V staining followed by flow cytometric analysis. After the post-game at the time point of 0 or 24 h-post incubation in vitro, there was a significant increase (P<0.001) in the percentages of apoptotic cells present in all players than in control group (n=15). Furthermore, the susceptibility of anti-CD95- or TNF-mediated cell apoptosis in 24 h-post-cultured PBMCs were increased (P<0.001) in college players after the game. In conclusion, intermediate-intensity of soccer exercise such as a full 80 min game may cause apoptosis in PBMCs. These findings suggest the possible mechanisms on the loss number of circulating PBMCs during acute exercise.
