Being the institution for knowledge preservation and management, libraries have been continuously experiencing rapid changes when computers and network services gradually become the norm of modern lifestyles. In view of such a shift, this paper attempts to explicate functions and values of the traditional role of libraries first and then to summarize historical viewpoints of the evolution of libraries up to the modern times. This research demonstrates a reorientation of the role of libraries and proposes new responsibilities and tasks thus entailed. (Author abstract)
