圖書館服務邁入網路新紀元:以史丹福大學線上目錄SOCRATES系統為例

Abstract

史丹佛大學圖書館的線上目錄系統是非常優秀的一個系統，事實其早已突破了傳統線上目錄所能提供的功能，或許稱其為線上資訊系統更為恰當。本文將了解其線上目錄系統(SOCRATES)的發展背景、現況及特色，再探討未來圖書館因應網路時代的來臨，如何提供使用者更好更新的服務，應該有那些最基本的考量。

Internet provides the powerful telnet function which allows users to login remote hosts and systems. More and more libraries, especially academic libraries, mounted their online public access catalog (OPAC) systems under Internet and permitted users to login their systems through internet. Stanford University Library Catalog -- SOCRATES is a very excellent OPAC system in the world. It has changed the traditional OPAC into a new type of information system. Libraries have a responsibility to provide every feasible means of information for their patrons. With application of network technology, libraries face many challenges to adjust their services for accommodating the network environment. What kind of problems we will meet and how can we employ the full potential of the network are discussed in this artical. As libraries entering the period of network, we should rethink our traditional missions including both technical and public aspects for exploiting the network technology to promote our services.
