dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This research aims at clarifying the meaning of some concepts often used by political scientists in Taiwan. By "clarifying" we mean that we intend to investigate how Taiwan public identify to the country and political parties. The method we used in this research is cognitive interview. We select our respondents from other telephone interview projects by asking Taipei area (including the Taipei City and urban area of the Taipei County) respondents if they would like to be interviewed in this project. Each respondent was interviewed for about 100 minutes on questions related to national identity, Taiwanese identity, Chinese identity, unification/independence attitude, and party identification. Our investigation confirms that national identity in Taiwan is very diversified. Between the two extremes, i.e. the "pure Taiwan identifier" and the "Unified-China identifier," there are other varieties of "mixed identifier" due to the respondents` perception of significance of culture, economic benefits, or political facts. As to party identification, the "green wing" and "blue wing" parties are the two major camps found among our respondents. We suspect that this might be a sign that Taiwan is on its road to a stable two-party system. Taiwan public`s identity to the country and political parties are results of political socialization. Politically, most of our respondents reveal an evident association with their families. However, the impact by other socialization agents are founded. New political and economic environments, including the Democratic Progressive Party replacing the Kuomintang and the declining Taiwan economy caused change of identity on aggregate level and individual level as well. | - |
