Collective interests and private interests are often at odds in politic al life. If facing the dilemma, what would Taiwanese stand for? Starting from the problem, we pick the cross-Strait exchanges as the case, and study the choices of the Taiwanese people. To do so, we conduct three parallel surveys to observe the dynamics their choices with and without dilemmas. Our research suggests that these people care about both collective and private interests. If the two are directly at odds, however, they would normally be caught in between and could take a clear position on the issue. But if they could get away from the difficult choice, they generally tend to stand for the collective interests: if they figure cross-Strait exchanges are good Taiwan, they would for it; if not , they would definitely against it.
