dc.description.abstract (摘要) | In the aesthetic literature, balance is very important for the artistic appreciation. But the definition ormeasurement of the balance is not clear. In this project, based on the eight indices for balance given by Wilson and Chatterjee (2005), some hypotheses were proposed. The bilateral balance relative to the vertical, horizontal, or diagonal axis may be almost the same as the balance around the center of mass. In contrast, the balance between the inner and outer regions of the image may be more close to the concept of homogeneity. Both the balance and homogeneity will contribute independently to the aesthetic value of the images. Moreover, the balance relative to the diagonal axis has higher degree of dynamics than the vertical or horizontal axis and therefore more beautiful. We further propose that dynamics may affect the aesthetic experience through the embodied simulation relevant to the function of the mirror neuron system. Therefore, mu rhythm which can reflect the activity of mirror neurons would be an appropriate measure to verify our hypotheses. Three experiments were designed for this project using geometrical images as the material. Experiment 1 investigates the effects of the balance with respect to the different axis (or axes) on the aesthetic judgment. Experiment 2 investigates the effects of homogeneity (and also axes of balance) on the aesthetic judgment. Manipulating all three factors (i.e., balance, homogeneity, and dynamics) in Experiment 3, we use mu rhythm as a measure to validate the involvement of the mirror neuron system for aesthetic processing of dynamics. The results of the first two experiments showed that the balance for two diagonal axes can have higher effect to increase aesthetic scores than the balance for vertical and horizontal axes. Therefore, the importance of the dynamics of images for aesthetic appreciation was supported. Also the effects of balance and homogeneity on aesthetics were supported in experiment 2. But the results of the mu rhythm inexperiment 3 did not validate the mirror neuron system as the mechanism of the aesthetic appreciation based on the dynamics of the images. Further studies will be needed for exploring the neural mechanisms for the aesthetic appreciation of the dynamics.
