Following the conclusion of World War II, Britain, while reclaiming control over its colonies, witnessed a profound divergence in the trajectories of its colonies, specifically Singapore and Malaya. The post-war political development of these two territories evolved along distinct paths, orchestrated by the strategic interventions of the British government. Despite a prevailing discourse advocating the unity of Singapore and Malaya, resonating amidst the surge of nationalism in Singapore at the time, the calls for national self-determination faced external interference within the backdrop of the Cold War. The differing perspectives of political leaders on the future of Singapore also influenced the relationship between Singapore and Malaya.Within two decades after the war, both colonies transitioned into independent countries and underwent a temporary merger. The efforts made by the People’s Action Party, led by Lee Kuan Yew, to bridge the gap between Singapore and Malaya deserve attention during this period. However, it is imperative to acknowledge the efforts of other political leaders both before and after the People’s Action Party took office in shaping the destiny of Singapore and influencing the dynamics between Singapore and Malaya. The relationship between Singapore and Malaysia during Lee Kuan Yew’s perild coincided with the entire Cold War period, resulting in fluctuating dynamics between the two. Academic studies on the Singapore-Malaysia relation during Lee Kuan Yew period often approach the topic from the perspective of contemporary international relations, with limited exploration of the broader historical context and a scarcity of discussions combining international dynamics with local politics during that period to analyze the development of the Singapore-Malaysia relationship. This dissertation initiates its exploration from the political landscape in Singapore before and after Lee Kuan Yew’s leadership, gradually examining how post-war political developments influenced the fluctuating dynamics between the two and attempting to analyze how Lee Kuan Yew strategically utilized political events to adjust the Singapore-Malaysia (Singapore/Malaya) relationship and Singapore’s political standing, exploring the impacts on the Singapore-Malaysia relationship.

zh_TW
dc.description.abstract (摘要) Following the conclusion of World War II, Britain, while reclaiming control over its colonies, witnessed a profound divergence in the trajectories of its colonies, specifically Singapore and Malaya. This dissertation initiates its exploration from the political landscape in Singapore before and after Lee Kuan Yew’s leadership, gradually examining how post-war political developments influenced the fluctuating dynamics between the two and attempting to analyze how Lee Kuan Yew strategically utilized political events to adjust the Singapore-Malaysia (Singapore/Malaya) relationship and Singapore’s political standing, exploring the impacts on the Singapore-Malaysia relationship.en_US
