In this study, we intend to examine change and continuity of the electorate in Taiwan. We argue that new/young voters tend to be partisan independents so the political landscapes become more volatile after 2014 local elections. We will conduct pre- and post-election panel studies in the 2020 presidential elections to examine and test our hypotheses. In this study, we will conduct large scale pre-election telephone surveys in the first year to see how personality, political emotions, and issue preferences might affect voters’ choices. We also conduct post-election panel studies to see stability of voters’ personality, political emotions, and their issue preferences. During the second year of this study, we will conduct in-depth interview to examine what factors shape voters’ political thinking. And we argue that voters under age 45 tend to be open-minded and less partisan and they are more likely to be swing voters to determine the election outcomes.
