My book-writing project will be aimed at the medical and non-medical history of emotional disorders and madness in Ming-Qing China. It will be divided into three parts. Firstly, I will investigate the definitions and boundaries of the mind, the emotions, their disorders and therapies in medical fields. Then the focus will be shift to the social impacts of madmen and sick persons of emotional disorders by examining various sources including legal case records. Last but not least, I will turn to explore the introduction of western missionary medicine into China in late nineteenth-century China. How Chinese physicians and intellectuals reacted to psychiatry and psychology will be the focus in my discussions. In doing so, it will help to reveal how the perceptions and treatments of Chinese madmen had been changed since then. By scrutinizing emotional disorders, madness and their healings in diverse contexts, this book will hopefully not only contribute to a better understanding of the emotions and mind as problematic in pre-modern China. It will also shed new light on the interaction between the ill, the mad and the society in general.
