摘要 The aim of this project is to understand how ordinary Americans living in China helped mediate the relationship between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) prior to the “normalization” of U.S.-China relations in 1979. While most studies of U.S.-China relations have adopted a “top-down” approach focused on high-level politics and diplomacy, this project will use private historical sources such as diaries, letters, photographs, and unpublished memoirs to reinterpret Sino-American relations “from the bottom up.” Focusing on the case studies of missionary philanthropist Howard Sollenberger, writer and actor Gerald Tannebaum, and teacher and photographer Sharon Crain, this project will examine how shifts in U.S.-China relations affected the everyday lives, personal relationships, and political activities of Americans in China. By highlighting the role of private citizens in shaping Sino-American ties, it will contribute to our understanding of U.S.-CCP relations, China’s soft power and public diplomacy efforts, and Sino-American cultural exchange. In an era when tensions between the United States and China are once again a key issue in global politics, this project will deepen our understanding of how a diverse range of American and Chinese citizens have shaped the most consequential bilateral relationship in the world today.
