Spain-China: A purely commercial relationship? This dissertation aims to study the motivations that conduced to the Spanish recognition of the People’s Republic of China (PCR) to the detriment of the Republic of China (ROC) on March 9, 1973. Spain and the ROC had had diplomatic relations since June 27, 1952. The Spanish government and influential newspapers such as The New York Times unequivocally affirmed the trade factor as the most important element in the Spanish decision to switch allies. Nonetheless, the debate is open. In this debate, two groups of researchers can be found: The first group called in this thesis the preservists, that have tended to subscribe to Franco’s versions of the facts in external relations, and the reactionaries, which have tended to understand Franco’s communications with the internal public as propaganda both in internal and external politics. In this dissertation, the goal will be to fill the gap in Academia on this topic and pose serious and neutral research on how 20 centuries’ episodes marked the relations between Spain, the PCR, and the ROC, how other actors (U.S.A, USSR, and European countries) contributed to the relations of the three and how trade, international circumstances, Spanish-Chinese internal context conditioned the Spanish switch to the PCR. The commercial element in the decades following the 1973 recognition will also be explored. This dissertation aims to study the motivations that conduced to the Spanish recognition of the People’s Republic of China (PCR) to the detriment of the Republic of China (ROC) on March 9, 1973. Spain and the ROC had had diplomatic relations since June 27, 1952. The Spanish government and influential newspapers such as The New York Times unequivocally affirmed the trade factor as the most important element in the Spanish decision to switch allies. Nonetheless, the debate is open. In this debate, two groups of researchers can be found: The first group called in this thesis the preservists, that have tended to subscribe to Franco’s versions of the facts in external relations, and the reactionaries, which have tended to understand Franco’s communications with the internal public as propaganda both in internal and external politics. In this dissertation, the goal will be to fill the gap in Academia on this topic and pose serious and neutral research on how 20 centuries’ episodes marked the relations between Spain, the PCR, and the ROC, how other actors (U.S.A, USSR, and European countries) contributed to the relations of the three and how trade, international circumstances, Spanish-Chinese internal context conditioned the Spanish switch to the PCR. The commercial element in the decades following the 1973 recognition will also be explored.
