dc.description.abstract (摘要) | Since the Taiwanese government lifted martial laws in 1987, Taiwanese Buddhists have increasingly traveled in China, India, Tibet, and Southeast Asia. This project will analyze the metaphors of going on pilgrimages, returning to home-temples, and taking educational trips in the travelogues written by Taiwanese Buddhist monastics from 1987 to 2000, investigating the changing relationship between Taiwanese and Chinese Buddhists, as well as their self-identities in terms of sectarian affiliations, Dharma lineages, and continuation of Chinese Buddhism. I choose to focus on the travelogues written by monastics for three reasons: (1) they are at the center of the issues concerning sectarian identity and lineage; (2) they often lead several hundred followers at a time on their trips to pilgrimage sites or their home-temple; and (3) given that their travelogues are widely read, their opinions and assessments of the situations are very influential. To further understand the organization of these trips and the publication of these travelogues, I will also interview Buddhist monks and nuns who have similar travel experiences as the authors of those travelogues. Previous scholarly discussion has concluded four types of exchange between religious groups in Taiwan and in China: going on pilgrimages and visiting home temples, philanthropist activities, public talks and round-table discussions, and academic and cultural exchange. Taiwanese Buddhists trips to China are typically not understood as going on pilgrimages and visiting home temples, even though those were two major reasons for travels. In addition to redressing this oversight, this project seeks to answer some underlying questions: After about 40 years of separation, how do Taiwanese and Chinese Buddhists continue or rebuild their relationship with each other? At the same time that Taiwanese Buddhists were “absent” in China, Buddhism suffered tremendous destruction, and so how do they even find enough foundation upon which connection can be established? How do Taiwanese Buddhists see themselves in relation to “Chinese Buddhism” after the two sides of the Taiwan Strait resumed contact for a dozen years? The first dozen years of reconnection were crucial in the two sides readjusting their perceptions of each other and clearing away mutual misunderstandings, and the travelogues witnessed this crucial period from the perspective of Taiwanese Buddhists.
