The Accidental Asian is in part a rigorous self-examination: the story of his grandmother`s life in Chinatown, of his beloved father`s death, of his own struggle to assimilate into American society and of his own frustration with Chinese hair. And this memoir is also a cultural commentary, in which the author brings conversations together in a collection of interconnected essays on racial identity and politics in the context of personal experience. The unifying motif of The Accidental Asian is the author`s painstaking search for personal and social identity, aiming at defending omniculturalism and challenging the ambiguous umbrella called `Asian American` in multicultural America.
Chapter One explores the epitome of the thesis and considers Liu`s ideal of omniculturlism for the future of American society. Chapter Two recounts the Asian American history in order to examine the conceptualization of what Asian American is. In Chapter Three, I discuss the significance of the upsurge in the concern for identity and multiculturalism, its relation to the question of Asian American identity, and what it means for American national identity. The subject of Chapter Four is the recent entanglement of nationalism and multiculturalism. Liu`s proposal to solve the problem of multiculturalism by coming up with an alternative called omniculturalism is examined. The last chapter brings the thesis to its conclusion.
