摘要 在每日的認知工作中,工具扮演了關鍵的角色。但有趣的是,主流認知科學基本上 是從個人心智(本文稱為「生物心智」,即biological cognition)的角度解釋認知工作, 忽視了工具的貢獻。本計劃之目的是探討工具在認知工作中的定位,重點在捕捉工具和 情境相依相倚的連動關係。本計劃第一部分對於工具的心智進行初探,接著指出工具的 心智必須「放在情境中」(situated)才能顯現。所謂「放在情境中」是指:工具和情境 構成一連動系統才能完成認知工作,工具能做什麼,視其和系統其他環節的相對位置而 定。同時,由於連動系統的動態性,工具的內涵常隨情境而變遷,充滿流動性。在這個 前提下,本計劃進一步提出工具智能的分析架構,並以蒐集資料和簡報為個案,檢驗此 一架構。
In spite of the ubiquity of tools in daily cognitive task, the mainstream cognitive science and communication study, which has been dominated by Cartesian orthodoxy, has failed to take tools into account in their conception of cognitive task. This project proposes to examine the contributions of tools to cognitive task, with special attention to the coordination and coupling between tools and their contexts. The first part of this proposal proposes a list of potential cognitive functions which may be facilitated by tools. The tools, however, are situated in a coupling system, in which the entities reciprocally interact. It follows that what tools can do cannot be examined in isolation with other entities in the system. Furthermore, because of the dynamic nature of the coupling system, the contents and forms of tools may vary across situations. Two cognitive tasks, information seeking and presentation are used as cases for the empirical study.
