| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | “Before Dawn” (Vor Sonnenaufgang) is the work by which German naturalistic writer Gerhart Hauptmann made a name for himself. This love tragedy, centered on issue of alcohol abuse, reveals the subversion of social values caused by racial hygiene (or eugenics) in the second half of the 19th century in Europe. The theme of racial hygiene is that marriage concerns not only individuals but also the progress or degeneration of a race, so bad genes have to be removed from heredity. In addition to bringing Hauptmann to success, this drama is a reflection of the early development of eugenics in literature. Influenced by eugenics, Germany in the early 20th century was actively into race improvement, which finally led to the Nazis’ theory of racial hierarchy. Therefore, this drama is of great historical meaning. The paper explores the drama’s racial hygiene viewpoints, traces where Hauptmann acquired his ideas for this literary creation, and discusses his relationship with his contemporary racial hygienist Alfred Ploetz. Through exploring the background knowledge f “Before Dawn“ (Vor Sonnenaufgang), this paper tries to unfold the acute social criticisms in work as well as arouse contemplations of eugenics out of humanity.
