Shaman (wu) had long been practicing ritual healings since the antiquity. Althought the existence of shaman was largely threatened owing to the flourishing developments of Buddhism and Daoism and the increasing domination of Confucianism in politics, it remained one of the options when the lay persons needed various helps in daily life. In the late imperial period, due to the lack of medical professionalization and qualification the medical markets were open and free to competition. As a result, shaman was able to compete not only with other religious healers, but Confucian doctors. Given by these historical hints this project is aimed at answering the following questions: When, where and how did the shaman treat the sick in Ming-Qing society? Who were their patrons/clients? Why did some of their ritual healings work? Meanwhile, what were contemporary doctors’ views of shaman? Last but not least, how did legal officials and local scholars react to the shaman’s ritual healings in late imperial China?
