Purposes: The purpose of the research was to explore the visual perceptual organization in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD). First, to study the visual local processing and global processing ability between children with HFASD and typical development (TD). Second, to examine the relation between visual perceptual organization and sample characteristic, like severity of autistic symptoms and adaptive behaviors. At last, the study attempts to explore whether intellectual giftedness and ADHD trait would affect the relation between visual perceptual organization and sample characteristic.

Methods: Sixty-nine children aged 7-10 years with HFASD and 40 TD participants with matched Age and Full Scale IQ were recruited. The study used 3 visual perceptual organization tasks such as form completion task, children embedded figure task and figure ground task, to measure participants’ visual searching ability and visual integration ability. Additionally, the participants with ASD were measured severity of autistic symptoms and adaptive behaviors by questionnaire or semi-structured assessments.

Results: Results indicated that the performance of form completion task of HFASD group was worse than TD group, but without difference in children embedded figure task and figure ground task. The relations among some visual perceptual organization index and severity of autistic symptoms were different in different way to measure symptoms severity. But results showed that most indexes of the visual perceptual organization were no relationships with severity of autistic symptoms and adaptive behaviors.

Conclusion: Findings support the weakness of visual integration ability in children of HFASD. But the results didn’t correspond to the hypothesis of former theoretical hypotheses. Future studies are needed to understanding the nature of visual perceptual organization and its relation with suitable measures.

dc.description.abstract (摘要) Purposes: The purpose of the research was to explore the visual perceptual organization in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD).
