摘要 The recent rise of several state leaders with distinct personal characteristics and leadership style attracts our attentions on the impact of leader personality on major policy changes in their respective countries. Some examples are Donald Trump in the US, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, Xi Jinping in China, and Vladimir Putin in Russia. The case of Xi is of particularly interesting because strongman leadership deviates from collective leadership in the Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao eras. If Xi is the most crucial single decision-maker in his ruling period, then what are major attributes of his political personality and leadership style? This paper claims that Xi possesses the following psychological traits and political beliefs: (1) disgust at extravagance and corruption, (2) self-confidence and low profile, (3) warm to friends but harsh to enemies, (4) political domination and nonconformity to routines, and (5) national rejuvenation and socialist construction. These shared attributes across different periods constitute the core elements in his political personality and leadership style, including the nature of politics, self-other relations, self-role in history, responses to obstacles and challenges, and etc.
