dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This paper is aimed to open the black box of the relationships between appropriability strategies and patenting motivations by the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) data of Taiwan. Different from the current literature, we derive patenting motivations by factor analysis and employ regression models to pin down the relationships between appropriability conditions and patenting motivations. The results can explain why some firms apply for patents even though they do not depend on patent to protect their innovation. We find that appropriability conditions include vertical scope of firm, nature of innovation, and appropriation mechanisms. If the vertical scope of an innovative firm includes more manufacturing capacities, the firm will have higher propensity to apply patents for defensive motivation. For process innovation, the innovative firms apply patents only for exclusive motivation; while firms with product innovation are inclined to apply patents for self defense. Finally, firms will apply patents for managerial and defensive motivations no matter what kinds of appropriation strategies they adopt. Firms who follow legal and multiply strategies will apply patents for cooperative motivation. At last, firms who only adopt legal strategy will apply patents for exclusive motivation. | |
