摘要 Developing countries have suffered a severe brain drain and then launched a variety of programs to lure back their nations with professional knowledge and highly skilled experience. This study is to investigate to what extent returnee researchers have changed the composition of scientific research in their country through intra-national knowledge transfer.

The bibliometric approach is applied to test whether the intra-national knowledge transfer between returnee researchers and local researchers results in significantly comparative advantages based on the theoretical backbone of absorptive capacity. The sample construct comprises a unique PubMed dataset on Chinese universities’ publications in life science.

Results report that the primary driving force of research performance in Chinese universities comes from the inorganic growth of intra-national knowledge transfer between returnees and locals. Besides, the research performance with intra-national knowledge transfer between returnees and locals is not superior to that produced only by returnees.

To conclude, intra-national knowledge transfer plays a vital role in the development of national research performance. It further implies that the consideration of the compatibility between the external and internal knowledge level might help utilize the assimilation and transformation processes of absorptive capacity to generate truly competitive advantages. Policymakers could take additional action to facilitate intra-national knowledge transfer.
