Wang Huning is one of the most consequential figures in contemporary Chinese politics. His significance is derived from his unprecedented career. Unlike almost all other political figures in China, Wang is a man without a faction, and he entered politics with no bureaucratic or political experience; rather, he was an academic. Wang is regarded as China’s Éminence Grise as China’s top political advisor due to his three-decade career as an advisor and rhetorical mastermind behind three different General Secretaries. His campaigns have laid the rhetorical and propaganda foundations for the Party and created encompassing banners for propagandizing and national unity behind the Party. His espousing of neo-authoritarianism and illiberalism present significant political change in China, and the content of his work and its reflection on contemporary Chinese politics cannot be overlooked. To understand the politics of China, the significance of Wang Huning must be explored. This thesis seeks to understand the broad-level political implications of Wang in terms of Party ideology and rhetoric, along with understanding the unique significance of Wang as a Party leader within the Chinese Communist Party.
