This dissertation investigates the religious spaces of Vietnamese migrants and immigrants in Northern Taiwan. Through an in-depth analysis of three distinct religious settings in New Taipei City - Pho Bi, a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in Xindian district; Zhude Fotang (Fotang Z), a Yiguan Dao Buddha Hall in Zhonghe district; and a Catholic Church in Shulin district - conducted from July 2020 to November 2023, this research addresses a notable gap in existing scholarship regarding the religious experiences of Vietnamese nationals in Taiwan. It delves into the historical, physical, and organizational attributes of these spaces and examines their significance in providing spiritual support, fostering personal and community development, maintaining cultural and transnational connections, and facilitating interactions with the wider Taiwanese society. Grounded in spatial theory, which illustrates the concept of space and place; the concepts of community, social capital, transnationalism, and merit-making; and Durkheim’s ideas on collective religious practices and community enhancement, this research utilizes ethnographic methods, including participant observation and in-depth interviews, to explore how these religious environments serve as vital components of the Vietnamese migratory experience. The findings reveal how such spaces not only facilitate spiritual solace and community engagement but also play a crucial role in the cultural adaptation and integration of migrants and immigrants into Taiwanese society. This research contributes to interdisciplinary fields by offering nuanced insights into the complex interplay between religion, migration, and urban space, and underscores the importance of religious spaces in promoting social cohesion and integration in multicultural settings. The policy implications of this study highlight the need for recognizing and supporting the diversity of migrant religious spaces to enhance community well-being and cultural harmony in multicultural societies like Taiwan.

dc.description.abstract (摘要) 本論文探討了越南移民在台灣北部的宗教空間。 zh_TW
dc.description.abstract (摘要) This dissertation investigates the religious spaces of Vietnamese migrants and immigrants in Northern Taiwan. The policy implications of this study highlight the need for recognizing and supporting the diversity of migrant religious spaces to enhance community well-being and cultural harmony in multicultural societies like Taiwan.en_US
