This 4-year project is a natural development from the MOST project that I’m currently executing. It aims to explore issues of moral psychology and meta-ethics in the Xunzi, and its ultimate goal is to develop and defend a position, cultural constructivism, that is inspired by, and a plausible interpretation of, the Xunzi. This position will have its substantive- and meta-ethical implications, as well as a special focus on the nature and the importance of emotions and ritual practices. This project is divided into four stages:1.The Role of Emotions in Moral judgments: A Comparative StudyI build on the “hybrid model” proposed in my previous work on the role emotions play in moral judgment in the Xunzi by (1) further exploring the nature and the function of emotions in the Xunzian model of moral judgment by examining two other contemporary interpretations, one by Van Norden/Hutton, and one by Sung; and (2) compare my Xunzian hybrid model with a contemporary Humean, emotion-based model: Sinhababu’s emotional perception model.2.The Nature of Emotions, Construction, and Ritual Practices: A Comparative StudyI delve deeper into the research of emotions. I aim to answer two questions: the nature of emotions, and the extent to which emotions can be acquired through and constructed by ritual practices. I first examine important contemporary theories of emotion, and I aim to show that the evaluative attitude account is closer to the way Xunzi understands emotions. I then show the role ritual practices play in the construction and in the shaping of emotions based on the evaluative attitude account Deonna and Teroni present. I will analyze some of the emotions unique to the Confucian culture to illustrate this point.3.Cultural Constructivism as a Meta-Ethical PositionI turn to explore the meta-ethical issues involved in my interpretation, cultural constructivism, and its substantive implications. I will spell out what I mean by cultural constructivism as a metaethical position, and I will also compare my position with two popular positions in metaethics: moral realism by Parfit and Humean constructivism by Street. My work at this stage will show the strength of cultural constructivism as a meta-ethical position, specifically, it provides a more sophisticated understanding of ethical normativity, which preserves its constructive aspect, as well as making room for the common intuition about moral knowledge: the discovery model. 4.Cultural Constructivism as an interpretation of the Xunzi This part of the work will be primarily based on careful textual analysis on the Xunzi, critical examination of alternative interpretations and comparing them with my own interpretation. The main alternative interpretations I will examine and compare are three different realist interpretations and a constructivist interpretation. I will also address the worry of nihilism and authoritarianism toward a constructivist interpretation of the Xunzi. At the end I integrate the work I have completed in the previous stages, and show how the work on emotions, moral judgment, and ritual practices figure in this interpretation.
