affect日期 2024 上傳時間 4-Sep-2024 15:12:26 (UTC+8) 摘要 本論文將探討夏志清的中國小說史論,以《中國現代小說史》(A History of Modern Chinese Fiction)與《中國古典小說》(The Classic Chinese Novels)為閱讀對象,考察夏志清在全球冷戰期間,於美國所書寫的中國文學史。然而,嚴格意義上來說,夏志清的中國小說史書寫,實則難以全然合乎中國文學史的書寫範疇與框架,而有其對「小說」這一特殊文類的倚重,使我們不得不叩問:夏志清於書寫其中國文學史之際,何以尤重「小說」這一文類?這與小說背後所蘊藏的書寫意義之間,存在著何種關聯性?這般關聯性,又如何進一步促成夏志清的中國文學史書寫?這些提問,是本論文寫作的起始點。但必須一提的是,實際上,夏志清應為耶魯大學英文系出身。在此前提下,究竟是在什麼樣的因緣際會下,使得夏志清由英美文學研究轉向研究中國文學,從而導致了他的學術路徑移轉?而這樣的學術路徑移轉,與全球冷戰期間的美國學術市場之間,將隱含著怎樣的拉扯?夏志清又將如何看待現代中國的文學生態?他的觀點是否也受到同時代周遭人物的影響?凡此種種,皆關乎夏志清如何在一個更大的全球視景下,系譜化「現代中國」的文學生產,因而亦是本論文所致力回答的核心提問。尤其,當我們將《中國古典小說》一併納入考量以後,這部古典文學史的書寫將如何迂迴地反映出夏志清對中國現代文學生態所開展的深刻思考,則將使得本論文所關切的關鍵命題更顯耐人尋味。
This study is an exploration of C. T. Hsia’s writing on Chinese literary history, primarily A History of Modern Chinese Fiction and The Classic Chinese Novel, to examine Hsia’s critical insight into Chinese literature. Hsia’s writing, with its emphasis on the novel as a unique literary form, diverges markedly from the traditional framework of Chinese literary historiography. This deliberate divergence provokes several essential inquiries: Why does Hsia prioritize the novel within the broader context of Chinese literary history? What intrinsic relationship exists between this prioritization and the deeper, perhaps more elusive, meanings embedded within the conceptual framework of the novel? How does this relationship, in turn, shape Hsia’s vision of Chinese literary history? These are the foundational questions that this study seeks to address. But it is of no small significance that Hsia’s intellectual roots lie in his training in English literature at Yale University. What were the circumstances that compelled Hsia’s academic transition from the study of English literature to Chinese literature, a shift that positioned his scholarship at the crossroads of Eastern and Western literary traditions? What tensions, intellectual or otherwise, might have arisen from this transition, especially within the fraught context of U.S. academia during the global Cold War? How did Hsia navigate the complex literary landscape of modern China, and to what extent were his perceptions influenced by the intellectual currents and contemporaries of his time? These considerations are pivotal to understanding how Hsia, within a broader global context, methodically traced the genealogy of literary production in “modern China.” Furthermore, when one includes The Classic Chinese Novel in this analysis, it becomes evident that Hsia’s engagement with classical literature is not merely an academic exercise but an intriguing detour that reflects his deep-seated concerns with the literary ecology of modern China.
