In recent years, scholars have begun to analyse a new, and growing, democratic recession, one that occurs in a formerly established, mature, and stable democracy. In contrast to democratic recessions identified in previous eras of democracy studies, such as those in post-colonial developing nations, the present crisis in established democracies has different explanatory factors. Among these is the rise of identity politics, the breakdown of shared national identity, reaction to mass immigration, the decoupling of liberalism and democracy, and even some of the contradictions within democracy itself. Also important are the effects of globalisation and the tension that it has with democracy at a national level. These tensions have accelerated the rise of populism, which has further eroded many important foundations of liberal democracy. It is important to consider how diversity, belonging, frustration or confidence in institutions, and conceptions of democracy have changed over time and how they foreshadow today’s crisis in democratic health. With two established Western democracies (Australia and New Zealand) and two Asian democracies (Malaysia and Taiwan) as cases, this study will explore the problems of national identity and social cohesion, and how institutions include or exclude people across class, ethnic, and religious lines, particularly in the context of nations building new post-colonial political cultures and institutions. Specifically, this study will discuss contested ideals of national identity, trends influencing social cohesion, and the confidence of the citizenry in their democratic institutions and constitutional arrangements.

zh_TW
dc.description.abstract (摘要) In recent years, scholars have begun to analyse a new, and growing, democratic recession, one that occurs in a formerly established, mature, and stable democracy. Specifically, this study will discuss contested ideals of national identity, trends influencing social cohesion, and the confidence of the citizenry in their democratic institutions and constitutional arrangements.en_US
