| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | Stephan Thome’s 2021 "Pflaumenregen" (Plum Rain) is the first German-language literary novel which directly focuses on the island Taiwan. Colonialism and imperialism created a social hierarchy there in which the majority of the population was dominated. Thome’s complex story of a family begins during the Japanese colonial period and ends in the present with the visit of a Taiwanese emigrant from the USA. Questions arise, e.g., where in German-language literature was Taiwan mentioned before? How is the question of homeland negotiated in Thome? In what specific way is the plum motif unfolded? How is the problem of alterity intertwined with language and homeland? Exemplary passages from the novel are read in constellation with Susanne Hornfeck’s "Ina aus China" and with reference to Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial concept of a multiculturality space of in-between. In addition, the function of the paratext and signals of multilingualism in Thome is analyzed. The changing historical rulers on Taiwan repeatedly generated innovative narratives of home and tradition. Thome problematizes conventional constructs of home and shows how colonization and imperialism also cause social deprivation instead of topographical dislocation. | - |
