SummaryThis study explores the challenges faced by Muslim mothers in Taiwan regarding sex education for their children. The primary issues identified include external factors such as government policies, family dynamics, and environmental influences, as well as cultural differences in parenting practices. Government policies in Taiwan allow for liberal sexual education and activities, creating a challenging environment for Muslim parents who must navigate these norms while upholding their religious values. Family dynamics, particularly the influence of in-laws and cultural preferences for sons, further complicate the upbringing of children in a religiously consistent manner. Environmental factors, including prevalent public displays of affection and an atheist societal backdrop, pose additional hurdles. Major findings reveal that despite these challenges, Muslim mothers employ various strategies to instill Islamic values, such as open communication, monitoring activities, and emphasizing religious practices from a young age. Schools also play a role by providing comprehensive sex education, although this sometimes conflicts with parental teachings. The study concludes that while Muslim mothers in Taiwan face significant challenges in delivering sex education consistent with their beliefs, they adopt adaptive strategies to maintain their religious identity and impart these values to their children. The research highlights the importance of supportive family environments and open communication in navigating these complex cultural landscapes.
