This study examined whether the experience of identity threat predicts workplace gossip directed towards other employees. A frustration-aggression hypothesis is used as the theoretical framework for predicting that employees who are frequent recipients of actions that challenge or diminish their sense of competence, dignity, or self-worth will engage in higher levels of workplace gossip. Because these employees had an experiences appraised as indicating potential harm to the value, meanings, or enactment of an identity. However, it is predicted that the strength of this relation will be moderated by individual attributes and situational factors. So I develop a moderated model and several hypotheses to test the moderating effects of conscientiousness, core self-evaluation, peer support, and hierarchical status on the identity threat-workplace gossip relation. I will use this model to explore employees’ responses to identity threat, such as workplace gossip, and their implications for future research on identity threat within organization.
