| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This project aims to investigate the role of contextual information in the early lexical processing by eye movement experiments when reading Traditional Chinese in Taiwan and reading Simplified Chinese in China. Eye movement studies of reading Chinese already separately show the lexical (phonological and semantic) preview benefit and contextual predictability on word skipping probability, indicating the early processing of lexical and contextual information. However, no study has been done to address the possible interaction of the lexical and contextual factors in the early parafoveal processing. This project examines the issue that whether the contextual predictability can facilitate the early lexical processing at orthographic, phonological, and semantic levels. In addition, Traditional Chinese differs from Simplified Chinese in about 40% of characters. The simplification makes the two Chinese scripts different not only in the visual form but also the mapping forms to semantics. Seldom researchers have investigated the possible outcomes for the lexical effects. This project will run the experiments to demonstrate the lexical effects with the same material for both reading Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. This project will be carried out in cooperation with a DFG funded project leading by Dr. Reinhold Kliegl (Professor of University of Potsdam, Germany), especially in the collection and analysis of the experiments for Simplified Chinese readers. The first year will merge and analysis the eye movements of Taipei Sentence Corpus and Beijing Sentence Corpus. The large eye movement data will be regressed (Linear Mixed Model, LMM) by various lexical properties of characters and words, contextual predictability, script difference, and individual difference. Moreover, a set of data for Simplified Chinese readers reading Traditional Chinese will be analyzed for the influence of simplification. In addition to this so-called corpus-based approach, the boundary paradigm is implemented in experiments to investigate the contextual influence on parafoveal lexical processing. Two experiments of the second year ask the question of whether the semantic or phonological preview effects can be modulated by contextual predictability. The third year conducts two experiments for the issue of semantic preview benefits of two-character words. The contextual biasing on processing Chinese monographs and homographs are investigated. | |
