The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked extensive debate and research over the past five years, particularly regarding its connection to anxiety and stress (Mertens, 2021, 2023; Taylor, 2020). News media play a crucial role in communication during national security and health emergencies (Pieri 2018), shaping how the public perceives risks. However, few studies have specifically examined how differences in word choice across languages influence fear narratives in news coverage. This paper explores the significance of news reporters’ word choice, with particular attention to how, and to what extent, the use of fear-related words differs in Mandarin- and English-language news articles in Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to gauge its ecological validity. The study analyzes 2001 COVID-19-related news articles published during the declared emergency period (March 2020 to May 2023, WHO) by four of Taiwan’s most widely read or trusted newspapers. By considering historical and contemporary factors that shape Taiwan’s news landscape, alongside framing theory, multiculturalism, and the results of a context-aware sentiment analysis, I argue that Mandarin-language news in Taiwan tends to use more alarmist rhetoric than its English-language counterpart and thus communicate a different narrative to Mandarin readers.參考文獻 American Institute in Taiwan (n.d.). By considering historical and contemporary factors that shape Taiwan’s news landscape, alongside framing theory, multiculturalism, and the results of a context-aware sentiment analysis, I argue that Mandarin-language news in Taiwan tends to use more alarmist rhetoric than its English-language counterpart and thus communicate a different narrative to Mandarin readers. en_US dc.description.tableofcontents 1 Introduction 1 2 Theoretical background 3 The General Role of News Media Coverage 3 2.1 Journalism History of Taiwan 3 2.1.1 Era of Martial Law 3 2.1.2 Post-Martial Law and Democratization 4 2.1.3 The 21st Century Media 6 2.2 Multiculturalism in Taiwan 8 2.3 Framing Theory 10 2.4 Fear 11 3 Method 12 3.1 Data Collection 13 3.2 Data analysis 15 4 Results 18 5 Discussion 22 5.1 Practical Implications 25 5.2 Limitations and Future Research 27 6 Conclusion 28 Funding 29 References 30 Appendix A 38 Appendix B 38 zh_TW dc.format.extent 940705 bytes - dc.format.mimetype application/pdf - dc.source.uri (資料來源) http://thesis.lib.nccu.edu.tw/record/#G0112ZM1040 en_US dc.subject (關鍵詞) 新聞媒體 zh_TW dc.subject (關鍵詞) 新聞學 zh_TW dc.subject (關鍵詞) 恐懼敘事 zh_TW dc.subject (關鍵詞) 新冠疫情 zh_TW dc.subject (關鍵詞) 傳播 zh_TW dc.subject (關鍵詞) 語言 zh_TW dc.subject (關鍵詞) News en_US dc.subject (關鍵詞) journalism en_US dc.subject (關鍵詞) fear narrative en_US dc.subject (關鍵詞) COVID-19 en_US dc.subject (關鍵詞) communication en_US dc.subject (關鍵詞) language en_US dc.title (題名) 比較台灣的中文與英文新聞中的恐懼敘事 zh_TW dc.title (題名) Lost in Sensation – Comparing Fear Narratives in Taiwan’s Mandarin and English News en_US dc.type (資料類型) thesis en_US dc.relation.reference (參考文獻) American Institute in Taiwan (n.d.).
