摘要 With this project, the proposer aims at narrowing gaps in both, (1) communication with a community having special needs, and (2) the development towards working cartographic concepts and principles that have always been a basis of visual communication in the first place, but should not be limited to that and therefore require translation to the tactile domain. By applying mature low-cost 3D print technology, a realization of the latter seems to come closer but as a tool for producing tactile representations of a visual basis this can only work if a solid cartographic concept is developed with a focus on the community, not on the technology. In order to fully understand how tactile cartographic variables are perceived, this project aims at developing a prototype that generates a print model from open map data in an automatized way, and enriches it with environmental data (here called environmental atlas). This may ultimately demonstrate that the limits of tactile cartography are not met by simple geometries and minimum semantics.Through the overall development process members of the community take part in shaping the realization, from concept to technical implementation. With a continuing lack of standards for visual impaired cartography, this project is a step towards definitions based on guidelines for tactile graphics and feedback from the community. On a longer perspective it is then conceivable that such products are much better accepted by the vision-impaired community than it is the case right now. The results from this investigation can also provide a foundational framework for developing spatial cartographic representations using kinaesthetic communication technology, that would ultimately not require print products. This would bring technology a bit closer to actual situation-aware map technology to be used by visual impaired people.
