| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | Increasing evidence shows that real network follows unexpected scaling laws. Many studies model various social systems by networks mechanism to examine its forming process and resulting pattern. Researchers have discovered power laws in economics, finance, physics, biology, demography and the social sciences. For instance, earthquakes, research citations, personal fortunes and the distributions of the size of cities all appear to follow power laws. Knowledge of networks mechanism helps to understand the driving force of certain patterns and how network structure influences economic activity. Most works model networks as evolving dynamical systems with two key elements: growth and preferential attachment. The process-based random network approach is applied to explain the formation of city.
A preferential attachment process is first proposed by Yule (1925) as an urn process in which additional balls are added to the system and are distributed among the urns; the probability that a new ball is added to an urn is an increasing function of the balls the urn already has. For example, the internet started from a few routers, it gradually grew with the new routes linking to those with more links. It shows the rich get richer feature. Preferential attachment mechanism describes a stochastic process referred to Yule process or cumulative advantage.
The growth of city is mainly determined by location choices of residents; the location decisions depend on the relative attractiveness of each site among the region. Empirical evidences shows that the Pareto coefficient (rank size coefficient) approximates one in the upper tail of size distribution of cities. The mechanism of the growth of city is consistent with the basic ingredients of network processes. The empirical regularity of the distribution of city size is corresponding to the scaling laws appeared in many networks.
The purpose of this work is to analyze city formation and growth based on network mechanism to describe the feature of the city size distribution. This work plans to analyze network processes; to simulate a general model by varying values of the force of the preferential-attachment to examine its feature; and to investigate the relation between the preferential-attachment force and the resulting size distribution. It is a preliminary investigation for city formation through a network perspective which is not analyzed in related studies. This may shed some light on the city formation from a new and interesting vision, and further to apply different mechanisms and instruments for city policy. | |
