From the perspective of aboriginal youth in Taiwan, the present study uses qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the misfit between current educational system and the needs of youth in aboriginal areas. Study participants are aboriginal youth at risk of truancy. This is a 3-year study, and interview method, participatory action research, and questionnaires are used for data collection. We interview youth and their significant others to frame their cultural experiences at home, school, and community. Participatory action research is used to engage aboriginal youth in the process of problem identification in current educational system. Youth participants develop interventions that meet their concerns, provide feedback, and dialogue with the community. Uses of expressive arts in action research further challenge participants’ creative responses and put their emotional responses in a concrete form. Action research and expressive arts media together maximize youth positive development. Lastly, questionnaires are used to provide a general picture of aboriginal youth’s positive development and their environments over the course of early adolescence. The rich data will help respond to the current gap between the educational policies and the needs of the aboriginal youth. Our results will contribute to the design of educational or support programs that meet the cultural and developmental needs of aboriginal youth in Taiwan. Furthermore, aboriginal youth through participating in this research will feel empowered thereby increasing their self-efficacy and move toward the direction of positive development.
