Suicide prevention has been an issue of global concern for many decades. One particular area of note is how traditional media deals with suicide. These kinds of articles receive widespread attention and are therefore tempting to publish; however, according to health communication research, news outlets that do so irresponsibly, particularly when it comes to beloved public figures, are at risk of activating the Werther Effect: essentially, copycat suicides in the general population. To combat this, various news agencies and international organizations have developed guidelines for suicide reporting; however, the effectiveness of these measures is infrequently looked at empirically. The present study employs an experimental method to determine whether helplines and additional resources are really effective in steering people's minds aside from their own suicidal ideation when faced with the suicide of a celebrity. Although some support was found for the effectiveness of helplines in promoting reasons to live, identification with the celebrity was a more important factor: if participants felt closer to the celebrity in question, they felt more inspired to continue living themselves. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
