This dissertation aims to re-examine the linguistic and cultural phenomena that became prevalent in colonies and treaty ports from the 1840s onwards, through the lenses of cultural translation and post-colonial theory. Previous research on Pidgin English has rarely touched upon its underlying cultural-political implications. Drawing on Naoki Sakai’s concept of the “schema of co-figuration” and Lydia H. Liu’s theory of “translingual practice,” and utilizing modern Western newspapers and periodicals as primary research materials, this study attempts to situate Pidgin English within the macro-historical context of imperial expansion and social change in modern China. The study concludes that this hybrid language should not merely be viewed as an auxiliary tool for trade or a linguistic variant. Instead, acting as a “site of translation,” it embodies conflicts of cultural power. Through linguistic contact, compromise, and translation, it refracts the construction processes of modernity, national identity, and Sino-Western power relations in modern China. The second chapter, “The Imagination of “The Other” in Pidgin English and Imperial Expansion,” explores in depth how Pidgin English served as a tool for constructing “The Other.” Chapter Three, “Translating Modernity: “Translingual Practice” of Pidgin English and the Establishment of the “Regime of Translation”,” argues that following the formation of translingual connections, Western vocabulary and concepts entered the Chinese context through Pidgin translation, and vice versa. This bidirectional linguistic permeation reflects the transposition of domestic and foreign capital power and illustrates the progression of Chinese modernization. Chapter Four, “Imagined China: The Generation of the Image of “The Other” in Pidgin English Literature,” analyzes three specific Pidgin English texts created by Western authors to demonstrate how they utilized the language to narrate China and construct the image of “The Other.” Chapter Five, “The Debate on Universal Language in the Perspective of Globalization: Pidgin English, the National Language Movement, and the Development of Modern Sino-Foreign Relations,” uses the concept of “universal language” as an entry point to examine the linguistic debates triggered by Pidgin English, which were closely intertwined with the development and dynamics of Chinese society at the time. Finally, Chapter Six, “Conclusion,” reflects on the contemporary implications of Pidgin English as the language of “The Other.” In summary, this research posits that Pidgin English, as a “site of translation,” embodies the collision and fusion of modern Chinese and Western cultures. Through close reading and analysis of Western periodicals and other documents, this study identifies Pidgin English as a crucial clue for understanding the development of modern Sino-Western relations, revealing how language became a site of power operation under the shadow of imperial expansion. As a significant historical case study, it offers insights into issues such as language education policy, cross-cultural communication, and international diplomacy in today's highly globalized society. It hopes to open up a space for exploring non-singular national identities and to contemplate the critical question of how language constructs identity.

zh_TW
dc.description.abstract (摘要) This dissertation aims to re-examine the linguistic and cultural phenomena that became prevalent in colonies and treaty ports from the 1840s onwards, through the lenses of cultural translation and post-colonial theory. It hopes to open up a space for exploring non-singular national identities and to contemplate the critical question of how language constructs identity.en_US
