This paper is about national identity among Kinmenese. It aims to examine the differences between national identity in Kinmen and national identity among Kinmenese living in Taiwan. From April to October 2025, I conducted thirty-one interviews with people in or from Kinmen (largely gained by snowballing). I divided them into two groups. The first group consisted of people in Kinmen and the second group consisted of Kinmenese people in and around Taipei. The goal of these interviews was mainly to get qualitative data from the interviewees. They were asked a series of questions that were mostly the same but were slightly different for different interviewees. This paper aims not only to document the opinions of these two groups, but also to examine what differences there are in opinion between the two groups (if there are any). The data gained from the interviews has been analyzed and compared to the already existing body of literature on identity in general as well as identity in Taiwan and in Kinmen. When the data was examined, the differences found between the two groups were not great. However, the interviewees in Taiwan were found to have a slightly higher identification with China as well as support for pan-Blue politics than the Kinmenese in Kinmen. The general findings were that identity in Kinmen is complicated and many Kinmenese in both groups hold to seemingly contradictory opinions. The interviewees’ national identities were formed by a mix of historical, political, and geographical factors.參考文獻 Adams, G. R. (1985). Identity and political socialization.
